Go get em’ Oilers

When I think of the name “Oilers,” I think of O.A. “Bum” Philips who coached the defunct Houston Oilers in the NFL.

Bum didn’t look like a good coach: pot belly, cowboy hat and boots, XL belt buckle and I think that is why I liked him. He didn’t look like a coach but he could coach the hell out of a mediocre stable of ball players.

Same goes for MacTavish. Looks like he should be working on Wall Street or might make a good weather man on the TV news or just co-hosting an infommercial with Kerry Fraser on men’s hair care. But he can coach. So I’m pulling for the Oilers.

It would benefit the NHL the most if the Oilers won the cup. Carolina has proven a lousy hockey market through the years and the US TV ratings in the coming games will again prove this. The words Redneck and Hockey don’t mix. Bully hates Carolina for all the same reasons I hate Tampa. These are gimmick markets with fickle fans, to me at least. There is no long-term benefit for the NHL for teams like this to win the cup. Short term? Yes, I suppose as far as low ad dollars go. Long term … no way.

I love hockey and I could really care less about the Cup this year. What does that say about the product?

The hell with it: there’s plenty of vintage hockey clips to get online. And that is where I believe the future is for Bully at least — to celebrate the days when the game was played and refed and run and enjoyed by real men.

Please thank the Philly braintrust for trading us two of our best players for two not so great players. We appreciate it.

    Brind’Amour (received for Primeaudonna)
    Williams (received for Markov)

Keep making trades like that with us, please?

And how can anybody who calls himself a hockey fan not appreciate what a great game Game 1 was? Seriously.

How can you be a serious, obsessed fan of hockey and appreciate the quality of the game despite the outcome of the game? Because, in my opinion, REAL sports fanatics have their favorite teams, but their obsession with the sport is driven just as strongly by their hatred of the “bad guys”.

Of course fairweather fans and espcially sports journalists can actually remain detached and objective enough to enjoy a game no matter the result. But true fans couldn’t care less if it is a 5-4 shootout or a 2-0 yawnfest … all they want to know is: Did the good guys win? Or more importantly: Did the bad guys lose?

My point: Being able to appreciate a dramatic game even though the team you were seriously cheering for didn’t win proves you are too objective a thinker to be a serious fan. And the Bully is obiously a fan.
