Surreal Scene @ The Joe

By now, folks are aware what happened to Jiri Fischer last night.

I just wanted in all seriousness commend Fox Detroit for cutting away when doctors started CPR on Jiri at the bench. I think that was a classy move. They could have stayed with the camera but they changed the camera to a safe angle where you couldn’t see anything and again, I think that was a classy move on the part of the Red Wings.

Imagine if you were laying there. Would you want TV cameras on you? No. Also it was the right move to postpone the game. That was likewise the right move on the part of the NHL and Jim Gregory who was at the game.

There are plenty of hockey games played throughout the world every week. Kids, teens, adults, semi pros, pros, college and so on. Whether you’re a Red Wing or a Pee Wee, it’s strange and emotional to see any member of the hockey family go down during a game especially when their life is threatened. And it should serve as a reminder that even at its very best, hockey is a game, and no matter how important it is in your life … it remains a game. Only a game. So say a prayer for Jiri and all the folks that lace em’ up every week so that they may compete safely and remain healthy to lace em’ up yet another day…

Bully’s not going soft. Don’t worry. But it’s important to remember that there is more to life than hockey. And this serves as a very loud reminder.
