Penguins A Microcosm of Society
The only real thing the Penguins have proven by advancing to the cup finals is that in today’s society — and the NHL — failure is rewarded. The Pens were so bad for so long, it is hardly a surprise that they are in the finals. Kinda like every kid now makes the team when they try, regardless of their lack of skill.
And cash is king as well. No money for the league seeing the Flyers or Rangers beat the Pens and not having Crosby and Malkin in the finals to boost ratings. (I predict lowest NHL finals ratings in years anyway. Folks no longer dig what the NHL is about … whatever it is about beyond money, who knows). Fairly obvious that everything was tilted to get the Pens where they are today, including the alleged Crosby “lottery.”
Reality check. The Penguins still need to win another 4 games for any of this to mean anything to them and their fair-weather fans. Where were all you bandwagon heroes when this team was stinking up the league for almost 8 straight years? At the Steelers games I guess. You’re not fans folks. Your team was shopping for a new city because you wouldn’t support them. Fickle, yes. Fans, no.
Yeah, OK, you’re in the cup finals. But if the price to get there is stinking for year after year, not a good business model. Pittsburgh is still a strange market. They will cheer for the Pens and buy tickets as long as you’re winning. When that stops … you’ll be in financial trouble again. A new arena won’t change that.
I’m sure the league will do what needs to be done to get these guys a cup ASAP.
Congrats to the Flyers. A great season. Unfortunately, you don’t have Crosby on your team or you’d be advancing.
Old NHL games will always have great value because teams were allowed to just play. No parade of penalties. Those games and championships were decided ON the ice … not off it.
