Need to Straighten Things Out here Canada!!!
So I’m watching the World Juniors games from BC, Canada and I can’t figure out why Canadians are booing the U.S. Anthem and booing the US Team and cheering whomever plays against the US team with great enthusiasm. if you want to mix politics and hockey, then let’s drop the gloves.
I have many friends in Canada but let’s get a few things straight, eh? You country would be a fucking parking lot for Russia or some other super power if it weren’t for the U.S. and your economy would be that of a third-world country. 24 of the 30 NHL teams are from this country which is also the HOME of Wayne Gretzky. Without the U.S. you’d have a 6-team pro league not to mention you’d be some communist country’s bitch.
Now go get your shine box!

I’ve got tickets to all the game in this tournament, so I’m sitting right there amongst the fans … and the ugliness. As a Canadian, the ingnorant booing of all things American makes me ashamed.
I fell real bad for the odd American fans that drove up across the border and have looks of pure astonishment on their faces when they hear the undeserved taunts and chants being shouted by some of the stupid people in the audience. To me the last people Americans should expect anti-American sentiment to come from is from Canadians.
I talked to an American writer in attendance … he said he expects to hear negative US sentiment at sporting events around the world, but what he heard during the Finland game surprised and bothered him.
It started in the early 90’s, this anti-American sentiment amongst ignorant Canadian youth (I won’t go into the reason why here in this forum, but it IS sports related) and the fires have been stoked ever since then. The most guilty of this is Molson Beer. They have based dozens of their TV ads on pumping up Canadian pride by equating it with anti-American sentiment. STUPID! And completely uncalled for.
Obviously the double election of George Bush and his crew haven’t helped matters, but politics and sports shouldn’t mix, I agree. Besides, it takes a very special brand of idiot to believe that all Americans are on board with President Bush’s policies.
PLAIN AND SIMPLE, the reason why stupid Canadians cheer against American teams … is because they believe it’s the cool thing to do. And that is a very stupid reason. It’s nothing short of bandwagoning. They boo the Americans because it’s the “in thing to do”.
If there are any Canadians reading this and disagree with me … I invite you to go to Hell. If one day in the future the Americans decide we are no longer worthy allies and the tanks roll across the border I hope you are amongst the first to be run over … because like a little dog nipping at a big dogs heels, you fools F*ing asked for it, and you ruined it for the rest of us.
If there is one country ON EARTH that Canada is allies with, it’s the U.S.. I takes a very stupid Canadian to not realize this.

I have to agree. I am not in Canada right now, am a Canadian living in Europe. I too was ashamed to hear of boos for the American anthem.
I am not always the greatest fan of the States, as some Americans can be arrogant at times, but as a conditioning coach involved in different sports in Europe, the confidence and toughness of many American athletes abroad is awe inspring.
I think many Canadian athletes could learn from the attitudes of American athletes. That attitude is basically ‘kick ass!’. And it works. I once was working with another country as a coach and was exorting a Canadian athlete that they have to be more aggressive and not so ‘nice’. His reply was that they were popular everywhere they went! I just about shit.
Hockey is one sport in which Canadians are consistently aggressive and confident, but being an asshole should not be part of the package. I hang my head in shame when I read about the booing and anti-American sentiments.
I love to watch American athletes do well in sports not typically dominated by Americans. That is where one sees the kick ass American attitude deliver results. Examples: Lance Armstrong, Greg Lemond in cycling; Bode Miller and Darren Rahlves in alpine skiing. The American ski team will be very dangerous at the Olympics.
People should cheer for great sport, no matter who produces the performance.
One last word - I have to admit that part of our problem as Canadians is the little brother syndrome, or being the sidekick of the USA. That is why Canadians can get aggressive, the USA is in most fields bigger, better, and louder.
But this is NO EXCUSE to be a prick. The USA is the BEST neighbor that Canada could have. Let’s hope that good hockey prevails, and the political stupidity is overshadowed.

If the boos against the USA are louder than the boos against Russia in tonights WJC game I am going to be very upset. But it will prove one thing … that the people making all the noise are too young (or too stupid) to remember who the real hockey enemy is. Canada would have won twice as many medals in international hockey tournaments (Olympics, Canada Cup, Juniors …) if it weren’t for big, bad Russia.
I’ll say it again, booing the U.S. Hockey team because you disagree with Bush Policy is unnecessary. AT LEAST half of all Americans feel the same way you do.
But it isn’t that … they boo USA mainly because it’s a the “in thing” to do. Stupid reason. (Boycott Molson.) If Canadian pride is being equated with anti-American sentiment then Canadians have got the “Little Brother” syndrome real bad.

Yep, the fools booed the Americans and tried to cheer on the Russians. For the love of God, why? Doesn’t anyone rememember “CCCP”? I can think of only twice where the Americans beat Canada in a big time game in International hockey. (The WJC a couple years ago, and the ‘96 World Cup with Richter doing his thing.) But the Russians (Soviets) sent us Canadians down in flames over and over and over … in the WJC three years in a row in recent times, and in the Olympics many times prior to that.
If I was Corey Schneider I would be calling up the Canucks tomorrow and telling them that I never, EVER had any intention of playing for a franchise in Vancouver.
Remember Esposito in ‘72? Remember the rioting in in ‘94? Ever hear how Vancouver is a goalie graveyard? The hockey fans here have always been a little bit stupid … all of Canada knew it before … now the whole world knows it.
Please don’t judge the rest of Canada by what you are hearing from the fairweather fans of Vancouver.
