Bullycast7 was a good one. Some comedy gold in there. I don’t know if you and Dave were drinking (or not drinking) but something was clicking.

As far as fights being all-but outlawed in the last 5 minutes … you are absolutely right, it is an important step in the NHL’s plans to altogether remove fighting from the league. Like I said here a few months back, it’s a “foot-in-the-door” type of rule that they will be able to easily expand on in coming seasons. “We aren’t trying to outlaw fighting,” they’ll say, “we are just expanding on a rule that is already there!”

Did anyone see that Romanian hockey brawl?! Ugly stuff. THAT is what happens when there isn’t regular fighting in a league to help let off steam every now and then. You have a COMPLETELY out of control stick swing incident where the combatants have no clue as to the “code” of fighting. Now, that sort of chaos doesn’t bother me so much … but if you are feminine man like Gary Bettman, do you want that in your league?

Hockey is one of a very few contact sports (Lacrosse also) where the players carry weapons in their hands. Shit happens, guys get stuck and slashed every now and then. Sometimes by accident, sometimes sneaky on-purpose. Tempers start to boil. If you want to avoid complete chaos, you must have fighting to let off the steam. Why the NHL hasn’t figured this out … it proves their short-sightedness.

But again, I don’t mind the chaos. A good boil over now and then … I miss that.

You better believe the NHL will implement their plan double-time to outlaw fighting once Don Cherry dies or retires. Some will argue with me how much power that guy wields. Don’t under-estimate it. Literally millions tune in attentively during his HNIC Saturday night sermons. In Canada, Coaches Corner has better attendance than church. And we all know that Cherry approves of fighting and disapproves of the NHL’s crackdown. He holds no direct power to affect policy, but he has the ear of millions of hockey fans. And if the NHL is a business, the hockey fans are the customers. If Cherry ever got pissed off enough about something that he actually encouraged his viewers and listeners to write the NHL and complain … the New York office would be swamped with literally millions of emails and snailmails.

But there is no one to replace him. When Cherry is done, fighting is done.

this was the funniest bullycast yet. I don’t know if you weren’t drinking … or were drunker than usual?? … but this one I might actually listen to a second time.
